Ellen's Advice on How to Simplify Entertaining

Entertaining in style doesn't mean a hostess (or host) can't take a few short cuts to make preparations just a little easier.

A few tips from Ellen:

1. Satisfy your guest's appetites between meals, order a selection of savory hors d'oeuvres. Serve them up with a few store bought items that store well. Suggestions for a well-stocked holiday pantry: dried fruit, mixed nuts, your favorite crackers and cheese, tapenade, italian salami, and assorted olives.

2. For the grand finale, dazzle your guests with a scrumptious and beautiful dessert that is extraordinary. With just 48 hours notice and using only fresh ingredients, Ellen will create a special holiday cake to match your every desire. 3. Plan ahead by laying out a meal plan including decorations. Organize your shopping list by store and you won't forget a thing.

4. Anticipate serving dishes, place them on the counter in advance with sticky notes identifying what will be served in each.

5. Start in your yard to find decorations for the table. For the holidays, pine branches, pine cones, and holly are a natural (and free) way to make your table beautiful. Add in a few pillar candles, and some Christmas ornaments, citrus fruits, bowls of fresh cranberries, or pomegranates.
